Don’t “Jenny” Your Personal Privacy with Poor Password Selection

There could be many titles for this post: “Don’t call the Helpdesk at 867-5309 when your account gets compromised!” or “Jenny Jenny Please Change your Number” but I settled on  Don’t “Jenny” Your Personal Privacy with Poor Password Selection. This is an interesting story on all users lack of creativity in password creation and how this an important issue in today's world.   Every week we get…See More

Does a Perceived Lack of Security Stop Movement to the Cloud?

Many enterprises struggle with the rate of movement to the cloud because of perceived security issues.  Read enough surveys and you might be tempted to conclude potential users have examined security and cloud computing and realized that the security problem is intractable and cloud computing is unthinkable.   We know security issues such as secure data transfer, secure software interfaces, secure…See More

Is your Premise Equipment Vendor about to be “Twinkied” by the Cloud

The rush to the cloud is underway in both the public and private sector.  Companies such as Vivantech ,a Higher Education ERP service and implementation provider, by introducing Cloud Centric software deployments are certainly changing the outlook for the traditional rack and stack server deployment.   Although there are still concerns about security, regulatory compliance , bandwidth and redundancy the cloud movement continues gaining strength.  …See More

I Am Moving from Ning to WordPress

I have been a faithful Ning user since 2008 when I was looking for way to to document my trip to China  It was free and it provided a great resource for that purpose. I really liked the tool and subsequently started writing down some of the things I was doing aka blogging on an instance of Ning I set up just for that purpose.  When the free version…See More

Best Practices for Users to Organize Files in a Google Apps World

We have completed the move to Google Apps at Casper College and are thus entering a new era of Digital Asset Creation. This is actually my second institution(the first was Western Oklahoma State Collegein 2007) to convert to Google Apps for education so I have a pretty good perspective how users can rapidly become overwhelmed when Google Doc files begin to accumulate at a rapid rate. I…See More

Are you Ready for the Zettabyte?Life Logging? Digital Darkness?

NOTE:  I have really enjoyed discussing techy stuff with our new Casper College librarian Brad Matthies since he arrived at Casper College and asked him to add his 2 cents to this blog post.   He contributed some really great stuff related to the Digital Dark Age section of this post and greatly reduced the number of  Okieisms such as "uins" yontoos, and ya'lls" this post would have had otherwise.  Thanks Brad.A Zettabyte is a billion Terabytes...there I said it. The Zettabyte or zettabytes is…See More

Does Anyone See a Problem?

Greg Mosier, currently Dean of College of  Business at University of Nevada at Reno, told me higher ed is like the Rock of Gibralter,  It just does NOT move quickly.  From the the early stages of my career I have thought higher ed was slow to react, but this may sum it up:   Does anyone see a problem when an LMS selection process at an institution is older than the age of the winning product line? [My point is that two years is a very long time for a selection process when the market is…See More

Unplugging from the Commercial Software Grid: Open Source is not Three Guys in a Shed Anymore.

Magical Media and the Need for More Substance than is in a Tweet: Ted Koppel Keynote at UMass Graduation

This is really good.  I have often wondered about the speed at which information flows and how much quality there really is in some of the info provided by modern media.  I love Ted Koppel's perspective on this and I think I even miss him as a part of the mass media.  At any rate I believe it is good perspective for technologists in general.  Below is a portion of the good stuff from the speech, the entire speech, and  a link to an article about the speech."More than ever before, we live today…See More

Facebook and the By Gone Days of Personal Privacy

Posted on January 30, 2013 at 10:00pm 0 Comments

Is it possible to live invisibly today?  The social media phenom known as Facebook has truly changed how we interact as a society and although recent surveys indicate we don't like many of the privacy issues surrounding our participation in Facebook  many of us are afraid to give up our newly found connections with friends and family.   We have given Facebook broad permission to broadcast photos to all of our friends, without asking us, at any time. …
